Inside Look: Studying In Austin

As a student new to Austin or an individual considering pursuing an education in the area, you’re probably buzzing with questions about where to go, what to do, and how to meet people. The excitement of a new city and new life ahead can be a little overwhelming. Rather than let that exuberance morph into anxiety, prepare yourself with some city knowledge that will make the transition a smooth ride. Whether you’re going to culinary school or med school, first on the agenda is figuring out the best study spots. Needless to say, learning is a bit less exciting than socializing, but the sooner you organize the more serious aspects of your education, including your studying plan, the easier it will be to let loose and have fun in the city.

To help you on your way, we’ve compiled a list of the best study spots in Austin, which will ensure a smooth transition into college-ville.

Urban Cool

When cramming is on the agenda, Epoch Coffee House on North Loop is a great spot to try. Its mellow vibe, quiet atmosphere, and free Wi-Fi make late night study sessions a relatively painless experience. This coffee spot is open until midnight. Bennu Coffee is a lesser known cafe in the Austin area, making it perfect for those occasional loner, low-key nights. Plop down into their comfy leather chairs, open a book, and zone out.

Peace & Quiet

Cafe Caffeine, off Mary Street, is the perfect place to avoid the hustle and bustle of a college campus. Mozart’s Coffee Roasters is also an option when silence is all you need. The spacious layout allows you to spread out your pile of books and have space to get in the study zone. Most customers are also college students, but some come to experience the beautiful lake view and patio seating.

Study Fun

Bouldin Creek Coffee House offers an escape from the long days when you’re drudging through course notes. The colorful coffee corner also offers breakfast all day, an array of food options, Fair-trade coffee, and a colorful, upbeat environment. Flipnotics Coffeespace Cafe is another good option for study groups and review sessions. Less of a learning lab and more of a mini entertainment venue, Flipnotics features local musicians throughout the week, as well as comfortable indoor and outdoor seating.

Local Libraries

The thought of camping out in a library can be the ultimate buzz kill for some, but Austin’s library selection is actually quite charming. And being surrounded by shelves of books might be the inspiration you need to get through a night of studying, and maybe even finish next week’s homework while you’re on a roll. Libraries available to peruse include Austin Public Library, which offers a lengthy list of research tools, the Lyndon B. Johnson Library, and Texas State Library.

Make It Work

The recipe for studying success depends upon the mood you’re looking for, the study treats you want to munch, and the type of cliental you want to be surrounded by. But when the top priority is passing a class, your best bet is to check out the library or coffeehouses outside your neighborhood and avoiding any and all unnecessary distractions of your social life. When studying is a top priority, socializing will be all the more enjoyable.
